Wildfires in Los Angeles: Death toll rises and investigations unfold
The destructive wildfires in Los Angeles have left a trail of devastation, with the death toll reaching 27 and 31 others still missing. As cleanup efforts continue, authorities warn that another wave of Santa Ana winds could worsen the situation early next week. Over 82,000 people remain under evacuation orders, with nearly 90,000 more on alert.
Currently, several fires are active, with the Palisades Fire burning approximately 9,596 hectares, and the Eaton Fire having consumed more than 5,700 hectares. Other fires, such as the Auto Fire and the recently contained Hurst Fire, have been significantly controlled. The city of Pasadena has declared a local health emergency due to the toxic ash and debris caused by the Eaton Fire.
Meteorologists anticipate calmer weather for firefighting efforts over the next few days, but warn of potentially dangerous winds returning soon. Firefighters are working to strengthen containment lines, but the situation remains volatile.
In terms of the investigation, Southern California Edison is under scrutiny for its potential role in the Eaton Fire. Lawsuits suggest the utility company’s equipment may have sparked the blaze, though SCE maintains that their lines were operating within safe parameters at the time.
Additionally, some residents speculate that the Palisades Fire may be linked to a smaller fire from New Year’s Day, though authorities have found no evidence supporting this claim. With most wildfires in California being caused by human activity, investigations continue into potential arson, accidents, and negligence.
To aid in the investigation, a Joint Regional Fire Crimes Task Force has been formed, focusing on arson, looting, and fraud related to the fires.
