Rassemblement National Secures Presidency of France-Morocco Friendship Group

The Rassemblement National (RN) was awarded the presidency of the France-Morocco Friendship Group during a meeting at the French National Assembly on Monday. This symbolic and strategic victory follows weeks of intense negotiations between various parliamentary groups.

Typically, these presidencies are distributed by consensus among political groups. However, this year, disagreements arose regarding nearly twenty countries, including Morocco. Due to a lack of agreement, an unprecedented "rotating" method was introduced, allowing each group to select countries in turn based on their parliamentary influence. These selections still require approval at an upcoming National Assembly meeting.

The RN, as the first to select, immediately chose Morocco. According to several MPs present, Marine Le Pen's team justified this choice by highlighting Morocco’s strategic role in diplomacy, economic development, and migration management. Additionally, the significant Moroccan diaspora in France adds symbolic weight to this presidency.

Alongside Morocco, the RN also secured the presidencies of the France-Italy and France-UK Friendship Groups, the latter being part of prior agreements.

Although these presidencies are mainly honorary, they serve to strengthen bilateral relations with the countries involved. However, the assignment of the France-Morocco group to the RN could raise questions regarding the future of Franco-Moroccan relations, particularly in an already sensitive diplomatic context.

The coming months will reveal the true impact of this decision on French foreign policy.
