11 Nigerien soldiers killed in terrorist ambush near Algeria
Eleven Nigerien soldiers lost their lives on Friday in a deadly ambush claimed by a terrorist group in the northern region of the country, close to the Algerian border, according to local sources reported on Saturday.
The attack targeted a patrol from the Agadez Special Intervention Battalion, which "fell into an ambush" near the Ekadé Malane area, close to the Algerian frontier, the same sources detailed.
The victims’ bodies, following the assault claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, were laid to rest on Saturday in a cemetery in the urban commune of Agadez, as media reports confirmed.
Niger’s border regions frequently endure violent assaults carried out by terrorist and criminal groups active in the area.
To address these persistent security challenges, a joint force comprising 5,000 soldiers from Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali—nations aligned under the Sahel States Alliance (AES)—is set to be established soon, aiming to combat instability in the region.
