Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan sign landmark border agreement
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have signed a significant border agreement aimed at fostering regional stability. The deal, finalized in Bishkek, was endorsed by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, marking a notable improvement in relations between the two nations since their last conflict in late 2022.
Japarov emphasized the importance of the agreement, declaring that the border will symbolize "eternal friendship" between the two countries. The agreement is expected to bolster security, stability, and sustainable development not only in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan but also throughout Central Asia.
A key aspect of the agreement is the reopening of the border, which had been closed since May 2021. Additionally, the resumption of direct air links is planned. The deal involves a territorial exchange, with Kyrgyzstan receiving around 25 square kilometers of land from Tajikistan, in return for either a similar amount of land or better access to shared water resources.
The accord also establishes neutral zones for specific roads and ensures that neither nation will obstruct agricultural or energy facilities along the border. Rakhmon described the agreement as historic, especially as it comes 33 years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Relations among the former Soviet republics in Central Asia, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, have been strengthening in recent years. These countries have progressively signed border agreements to improve trade and regional stability.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which includes China, many Central Asian nations, Iran, India, and Russia, has expressed support for the Kyrgyz-Tajik deal. China, a key neighbor of both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, plays a pivotal role in the region, investing in large-scale infrastructure projects under its New Silk Roads initiative, aimed at enhancing access to Central Asia and boosting trade with Europe.
