FIFM: Mixed Opinions Surround Bold Moroccan Sci-Fi Film ‘Animalia’
"Animalia," a science fiction film directed by Sophia Alaoui, made its debut at the International Film Festival of Marrakech (FIFM). The film revolves around the experiences of Itto, a Moroccan woman of modest Amazigh descent who finds herself grappling with an extraterrestrial emergency.
Post-FIFM, the film, co-produced by Moroccan and French filmmakers, generated a spectrum of responses. Some applauded the bold venture of delving into a genre unfamiliar to Moroccan cinema, while others struggled to connect with the characters.
Itto, married into a wealthy family with a child, is portrayed as trapped in seclusion, estranged from her spouse and his family. Her journey unfolds as she becomes a witness to eerie supernatural occurrences, leading her to seek answers with the help of an Amazigh man she encounters. Along the way, she experiences episodes resembling seizures, blurring the fine line between reality and illusion.
The pregnant protagonist becomes increasingly self-conscious of venomous animals showing interest in her abdomen. Initially causing great unease, by the film's conclusion, she has grown accustomed to it.
Reactions at the screening varied from perplexity to contentment, as the story delves into the supernatural realm, showcasing how Itto and those around her maintained their faith despite adversity.
"Animalia" explores a myriad of topics, including social disparities, faith, bribery, motherhood, and acceptance. While some actors exhibited signs of inexperience, the majority of the dialogue was delivered in the Amazigh dialect, representing the often-overlooked Moroccan Amazigh people in the film industry.
Beyond Morocco, the film received widespread acclaim and positive reception, sparking inquiries into audience responses to distinct narratives. Souad Khouyi, a prominent actress, portrayed Itto's mother-in-law and expressed the challenges faced by Moroccan artists in tackling such a genre with limited knowledge, underscoring the concerns of the entire cast.
