Belgium's reformist movement party backs Morocco's claim over Sahara

Georges-Louis Bouchez, the President of Belgium’s Reformist Movement Party, has formally introduced a bill to the federal parliament advocating for the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara. This significant announcement was confirmed through the party's official channels and made during Bouchez's diplomatic visit to Morocco, where he engaged in discussions aimed at bolstering relations between Rabat and Brussels.

The bill underscores the party’s commitment to a long-term vision focused on judicial cooperation and shared security, with an emphasis on supporting a political framework that promotes stability in Morocco’s southern provinces. According to the statement released by the party, the proposed legislation aims to lend robust support to the Autonomy Plan, which it deems the only credible route toward resolving the enduring dispute over Sahara.

Bouchez articulated the viability of Morocco’s initiative for a peaceful resolution, stating that the region has transformed into "an area of development, stability, and peace under Moroccan administration," a sentiment he personally witnessed during his visits to Laayoune and Dakhla. The Belgian party has called for a reevaluation of Belgium's stance on the matter, arguing that its historical neutrality no longer aligns with the current geopolitical landscape.

The party argues that acknowledging Morocco’s position is consistent with international law and would facilitate a pragmatic political solution reflecting on-ground realities. Belgium has consistently highlighted the autonomy initiative as a serious and credible political solution aimed at resolving the territorial conflict.

Recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty could significantly enhance the country’s diplomatic standing as numerous nations join the growing chorus of support for its national interests. Currently, 113 countries endorse Morocco's autonomy initiative, viewing it as the most viable solution to the dispute. This includes unwavering backing from major world powers, such as the United States and France.

Recently, Korea also expressed its support for Morocco's autonomy initiative, characterizing it as the most effective path toward resolving the territorial issue. This endorsement, announced on May 9, marks a further diplomatic setback for Algeria, which continues to support the Polisario Front, the separatist group challenging Morocco's territorial claims.

The developments surrounding this legislative proposal highlight an evolving international perspective on the Sahara conflict, signaling a potential shift in diplomatic alignments and support for Morocco’s sovereignty.
