British teenager pleads guilty to triple homicide in knife attack
A British teenager has admitted to the brutal murder of three young girls in a knife attack that occurred in northern England in July. The tragic event shocked the nation and sparked widespread riots across the country.
Axel Rudakubana, 18, changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial at Liverpool Crown Court. He was responsible for the deaths of Bebe King, 6; Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7; and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, who were attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in Southport on July 29, 2024.
In addition to the murders, Rudakubana also pleaded guilty to 10 charges of attempted murder related to the attack. He was also charged with producing ricin, a deadly poison, and possessing an al-Qaeda training manual.
The judge, Julian Goose, confirmed that Rudakubana would be sentenced on Thursday, with a life prison term being certain. The teenager appeared in court wearing a grey tracksuit and a surgical mask, remaining silent except for his admission of guilt.
Rudakubana, originally from Wales with Rwandan heritage, resided in Banks, a village near Southport. Following the murders, false reports spread on social media claiming that the suspect was a Muslim migrant, leading to riots in Southport. These disturbances soon spread across the UK, resulting in attacks on mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers. The Prime Minister condemned the violence, attributing it to far-right extremists, and more than 1,500 arrests were made.
The UK’s Interior Minister, Yvette Cooper, expressed her condolences for the victims' families, stating that the coming days would be deeply difficult for them. However, she emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to proceed for justice to be served.
