Chilean Senate Endorses Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Sahara

The Chilean Senate has officially expressed support for Morocco's autonomy initiative in Sahara, signaling a pivotal shift in Chile’s stance on the territorial dispute. Senator Francisco Chauan, a key figure in this development, announced the resolution during the Future Conference held in Rabat on December 17-18.

The conference, organized in partnership with Morocco's Parliament, the Future Meetings Foundation, and Chile’s legislative chambers, addressed pressing global issues. Chauan highlighted the autonomy initiative as a practical solution that has driven remarkable development and improved living standards in Morocco’s southern provinces.

Having visited Laayoune, Chauan described the city's transformation as “unprecedented,” praising the advancements in infrastructure and quality of life. He emphasized that Morocco’s approach effectively addresses local concerns, presenting a successful model for regional governance.

The Future Conference brought together parliamentarians, researchers, and global stakeholders to discuss challenges like climate change, migration, food security, and international peace. Specific focus was placed on North-South cooperation, the energy transition, and advancements in artificial intelligence.

Chilean support for Morocco’s territorial integrity has been growing. In 2023, Chauan, as head of Chile’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Morocco’s autonomy plan. During his visit to Rabat earlier this year, he advocated for stronger Latin American backing of the plan and discussed deepening bilateral cooperation through trade and green energy initiatives.

Chile’s evolving stance contrasts with its earlier position in 1999, when recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) was considered but never implemented. Recent developments reflect Chile’s focus on reinforcing diplomatic and economic ties with Morocco.

This conference also underscored the broader potential for collaboration between the two nations, particularly in sectors like fertilizers and renewable energy. Such efforts could pave the way for a robust partnership, benefiting not only Morocco and Chile but also fostering stability and development across the region.
