Colombia detains Moroccan mastermind of Latin American drug networks

Colombian authorities, in collaboration with their Belgian and British counterparts, have apprehended a prominent drug lord, Namousi Munir, widely known as “Mo.” This operation highlights a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region.

Munir, a Belgian citizen of Moroccan descent, is reportedly a crucial intermediary between the Balkan Cartel and various drug trafficking syndicates operating in Latin America. His arrest underscores the international dimensions of drug trafficking networks and their intricate connections across continents.

The operation was revealed during the inauguration ceremony for the new commander of the Bogotá Metropolitan Police, Brigadier General Giovanni Cristancho Zambrano, held on February 28, 2025, at Bolivar Square, a central hub in Colombia's capital.

General Carlos Fernando Triana, Director of the Colombian National Police, elaborated on the details of the operation, which took place in Barranquilla, a city in northern Colombia. He emphasized that the arrest stemmed from an extensive investigation that uncovered critical links between Munir's cartel and the Clan del Golfo, one of Colombia's most notorious criminal organizations.

As authorities continue to dismantle these complex drug trafficking networks, the collaboration among international law enforcement agencies is proving essential in addressing the global challenge of narcotics smuggling and organized crime.
