Former German President and UN Envoy Passes Away at 81

Former German President Horst Köhler, who held office from 2004 until his resignation in 2010, has passed away at the age of 81 following a brief illness. The announcement was made by the presidential office in Berlin on Saturday. Köhler was first elected as Germany’s federal president on May 23, 2004, and after serving his first term, he was re-elected for a second term in 2009. However, he resigned unexpectedly in May 2010.

In a statement of condolence, Germany’s current president praised Köhler for his significant contributions to the country, describing him as a “stroke of luck for our nation.” President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed deep gratitude for Köhler’s leadership, highlighting the lasting impact he had on the nation during his presidency.

In addition to his role as president, Köhler also played a key diplomatic role as the United Nations special envoy for Moroccan Sahara .He stepped down from the position due to health concerns. His work, both in Germany and on the international stage, left a lasting legacy.
