Growing international pressure on Israel amid Gaza crisis
The international community should consider sanctions against Israel to halt the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Spain's foreign minister has asserted. This statement precedes a significant meeting in Madrid on Sunday, where European and Arab nations will convene to advocate for an end to Israel's military offensive.
Historically, countries that Israel once viewed as steadfast allies have recently amplified their calls for action, particularly following Israel's escalation of military operations against Hamas in Gaza. This surge in violence follows a devastating attack by Hamas on Israel in October 2023, which ignited the current crisis.
The situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, exacerbated by a two-month blockade that has intensified shortages of essential supplies, including food, water, fuel, and medicine. Aid organizations have reported that the limited supplies permitted entry by Israel are grossly insufficient to meet the urgent needs of the population, raising alarming concerns about potential famine.
Spain's foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, emphasized the urgency of the matter in an interview with France Info radio. He stated that humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza "massively, unimpeded, neutrally," insisting that the decision on who receives aid should not be dictated by Israel.
The upcoming meeting in Madrid will see the participation of representatives from 20 nations and various international organizations, all united under the goal of ending what Albares described as a war "that no longer has any goal." This gathering follows a previous summit held in Madrid last year, which brought together key players such as Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and several European countries that support Palestinian statehood.
In addition to addressing immediate humanitarian needs, the meeting aims to promote a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Following a recent decision by the European Union to reassess its cooperation agreement with Israel, Albares remarked, "We must consider sanctions; we must do everything, consider everything to stop this war."
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with the October 7, 2023, attack claiming the lives of 1,218 individuals, primarily civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official data. In retaliation, Israel's military operations have reportedly resulted in nearly 54,000 deaths, mostly among civilians, as claimed by Gaza's health ministry.
As the international community rallies in Madrid, the hope is for a decisive move towards peace and a resolution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
