Houthi missile strike targets Israel amid Gaza conflict
The Houthis have launched a hypersonic missile aimed at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, following the Israeli army's breach of a ceasefire in Gaza. According to a statement by Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree, the Yemeni armed forces successfully carried out a military operation targeting the airport in the occupied Jaffa region, using a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile.
This strike marks the second such attack since the United States initiated a new round of air raids on the Houthis earlier in the week. Israel's military reported intercepting the missile before it could enter Israeli territory. Sirens were activated in several Israeli regions, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, though no significant injuries were reported.
The United States has launched multiple strikes on Yemen since Saturday, with the Houthis vowing to escalate their attacks, including on Israel, in retaliation for Israel's actions in Gaza. At least 31 people have been killed in the U.S. strikes. The Houthis had previously declared that they would target Israel in response to Israel's violation of the Gaza ceasefire. Since Tuesday, Israeli military actions in Gaza have claimed at least 710 Palestinian lives, with more than 900 others wounded, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health.
Since Israel’s military offensive began in late 2023, the Houthis have launched over 100 attacks on shipping, citing their solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. U.S. President Donald Trump recently reiterated his demand for Iran to cease its support for the Houthis, pledging their eventual defeat. Despite the Houthis' alliance with Iran, the extent of Iranian support and influence over their operations remains unclear.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, condemned the U.S. airstrikes in Yemen, calling them a "crime" that must be halted.
