Israeli chief of staff resigns, citing October 7 failure

Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has announced his intention to step down from his position in March 2025, acknowledging responsibility for the military's failure on October 7, 2023.

In his statement, Halevi revealed that he had informed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of his decision, emphasizing the significance of this choice amid ongoing efforts to achieve tangible results for the military and implement an agreement to release hostages. He noted, "Given my acknowledgment of responsibility for the military's failure on October 7 and with the Israel Defense Forces reaching notable achievements, I wish to conclude my role on March 6, 2025."

Halevi also stated his commitment to completing internal investigations and enhancing the military's preparedness for future security challenges before transitioning leadership to his successor. "I will ensure a thorough and strategic handover to my successor," he added, confirming that he had officially communicated his decision to the defense minister and the prime minister.

This announcement comes three days after the implementation of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas and coincides with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's launch of the "Iron Wall" military operation in the West Bank, specifically in Jenin and its refugee camp.

Additionally, the commander of the southern region of the Israeli army has also tendered his resignation.
