Morocco’s autonomy initiative gains momentum ahead of Green March anniversary

As the 50th anniversary of the Green March approaches, more than 110 countries have expressed support for Morocco's autonomy initiative regarding Sahara. Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized this shift during an exclusive interview with Medi1TV, highlighting the potential for a definitive resolution to the longstanding conflict.

Hilale stated, “The United States is determined to close the Sahara file, and we hope to celebrate the final end of this conflict at the 50th anniversary of the Green March.” This anniversary, set for November 6, holds significant symbolic value for Moroccans.

In the context of evolving international relations, Hilale noted a notable shift in France's stance, referencing a letter from President Emmanuel Macron affirming Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara. This perspective has received further backing from the French government, reaffirming its support for Morocco's position.

The growing international backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative reflects a broader trend, with Hilale asserting that the US has adopted a strong and clear stance in favor of Morocco’s proposals. He emphasized the importance of the US's permanent membership in the UN Security Council in shaping the discourse around this issue.

Hilale criticized the Polisario Front, asserting that the separatist group lacks democratic legitimacy. In contrast, he pointed out that the elected representatives in Morocco’s southern provinces uphold a legitimate claim to governance. He disclosed information linking the Polisario to Iran and Hezbollah, raising concerns about security threats in the region.

The diplomat underscored Algeria's refusal to engage in dialogues as a means to prolong the conflict, accusing it of facilitating destabilizing influences in the region. Hilale remarked that Algeria’s actions reflect a desire for control over a separatist entity that could grant access to the Atlantic Ocean.

During a recent UN Security Council meeting, UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura highlighted the opportunity for renewed discussions over the next three months. He urged stakeholders to capitalize on the current momentum to establish a credible political process.

Hilale reiterated Morocco's commitment to resolving this conflict while respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed hope that the upcoming anniversary could serve as a turning point, paving the way for lasting peace in the region.
