Morocco's bold leap into AI: leading Africa's ethical tech revolution

Morocco has taken a monumental step toward becoming a trailblazer in Artificial Intelligence (AI) across Africa. During its inaugural National AI Summit in Rabat, the country announced a strategic partnership with Current AI, solidifying its commitment to ethical and inclusive technological development.

A groundbreaking partnership for ethical AI

Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Digital Transition minister, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Current AI, a global initiative launched in Paris earlier this year with $400 million in funding. The partnership, backed by substantial Moroccan government support, aims to develop AI systems rooted in ethical principles and local values.

Martin Tisne, president of Current AI’s steering committee, praised Morocco’s leadership as a founding member, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. "This partnership strengthens ties between Morocco and Current AI while supporting a broader movement for ethical AI that reflects diverse histories, languages, and cultures," Tisne said.

Morocco's vision for AI leadership in Africa

Seghrouchni highlighted Morocco’s ambitious plans to transform into Africa’s digital hub, championing sustainable development through structured AI collaboration. She described AI as a tool to modernize society while preserving cultural identity and promoting inclusivity.

"AI opens tremendous opportunities to modernize our societies within an ethical and inclusive model that embraces our rich local characteristics," Seghrouchni said. She also called for clearer coordination in Morocco's AI ecosystem, which currently suffers from fragmented initiatives.

The government’s financial commitment will fund pilot projects in linguistic diversity, healthcare, and accountability, paving the way for a coherent and sovereign AI strategy. Morocco’s participation in Current AI’s constitutional general assembly this month will further cement its role as a founding member of this global initiative.

A catalyst for transformation

Beyond economic prospects, Seghrouchni underscored AI’s potential to drive social and cultural transformation. "These [AI technologies] are subjects with tremendous added value for Morocco, for the economy, but also for society," she noted.

Morocco’s vision extends beyond national interests, as the country aims to lead African cooperation in AI and foster multilateral partnerships. By breaking free from traditional technological dependencies, Morocco is positioning itself as a key voice in global conversations about AI regulation, innovation, and ethical use.
