Netflix Ventures into New Territory: Live Streaming NFL Games
In a bold move, Netflix, has struck a resounding deal with the National Football League (NFL), the illustrious professional American football association. This agreement will allow the platform to broadcast championship matches live during the Christmas holiday season, marking a significant strategic shift.
A Cautious yet Promising Foray
While Netflix cautiously embarks on this new venture, it has managed to secure a coveted gem, as highlighted by our colleagues at ArsTechnica. The NFL is not only a major attraction during the Super Bowl but also accounted for 93% of the most-watched television programs in the United States in 2023, demonstrating its massive appeal to the audience.
This initiative proves to be a savvy way to retain the existing subscriber base. Cable networks have observed that even after the season ends, many customers retain their subscription in anticipation of the next season.
A Giant Step in the World of Live Sports
While Netflix has previously streamed a celebrity golf tournament, live broadcasting of NFL matches marks a significant first for the platform in the sports domain. Previously, the entertainment giant had expressed skepticism about live streaming sports events, whose licensing rights are extremely costly. Last summer, Ted Sandaros, co-CEO of the company, stated during a teleconference:
"We truly believe we can offer a solid experience for sports fans on Netflix without being part of the complex economic model of live sports licensing."
A Documentary Approach Crowned with Success
However, Netflix has never overlooked the potential of sports to attract audiences. Its strategy so far has primarily involved airing acclaimed documentary series, which have helped rejuvenate certain sports' images.
The resounding success of "Drive to Survive," the production highlighting Formula 1, now in its sixth season on the platform, cannot be understated. This trend continued with the launch of programs dedicated to tennis, rugby, football, and cycling, each experiencing varying degrees of success.
As Netflix takes this new step by streaming NFL matches live, sports enthusiasts eagerly anticipate how this foray will influence the platform's future and the overall sports media landscape.
