OCP Green Water bolsters Casablanca’s water supply with advanced desalination project
OCP Green Water has significantly strengthened water security in Casablanca South by delivering 60 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually, addressing the region’s growing demand for potable water.
The initiative, launched in October 2024, represents a major effort to mitigate water stress in the Oum Rabii basin while showcasing OCP Group’s dedication to sustainable water management. Developed in collaboration with OCP Manufacturing, JESA, public authorities, and national and international industrial partners, the project reinforces the city’s water infrastructure and enhances resource stability.
A key component of this development is a dedicated desalination unit at OCP’s Jorf Lasfar facility. Initially supplying 20 million cubic meters of water per year, the plant scaled up production to 60 million cubic meters by December 2024, now meeting over a quarter of Casablanca’s potable water needs.
The project integrates advanced technology, including a seawater desalination plant operated by OCP Green Water, a state-of-the-art pumping station, and a 54.5-kilometer pipeline developed by public authorities. This pipeline links the desalination system to the Daourate dam station, ensuring reliable water delivery to Casablanca South.
In line with OCP Group’s commitment to sustainability, the initiative incorporates an innovative seawater recycling process. By reusing desalinated seawater in industrial operations at Jorf Lasfar, the system minimizes environmental impact, optimizes resource use, and reduces waste.
This project plays a pivotal role in enhancing water security for Casablanca’s growing urban population. By diversifying water sources and reducing pressure on natural freshwater reserves, the initiative not only ensures a stable supply of potable water but also contributes to resilience against climate challenges, such as drought and extreme weather conditions.
OCP Green Water’s leadership in non-conventional water resource development extends beyond desalination. The company also prioritizes wastewater treatment to further diversify and stabilize water supplies. Cities including Khouribga, Youssoufia, Benguerir, and Marrakech are set to benefit from similar projects in the near future.
As of late 2024, OCP Green Water’s combined desalination capacity at Jorf Lasfar and Safi reached 185 million cubic meters. The group aims to increase this to 280 million cubic meters by 2025 and 560 million cubic meters by 2027, alongside plans to expand wastewater treatment capacity to 50 million cubic meters.
In collaboration with OCP Group, government authorities, and industrial partners, OCP Green Water continues its mission to deliver sustainable water solutions. By integrating innovation and environmental stewardship, the group is paving the way for a future defined by both resource efficiency and resilience to climate challenges.
