Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has called on Israel to show mercy toward Gaza by ending the ongoing conflict and halting the systematic destruction of the Palestinian territory’s healthcare infrastructure. After more than two and a half months of a complete blockade on Gaza, devastated by the war between Hamas and Israel, approximately 90 humanitarian aid trucks arrived on Wednesday, according to the United Nations.

The Israeli military’s retaliatory campaign has resulted in at least 53,762 deaths in Gaza, mostly civilians, based on health ministry data from Hamas that the UN considers credible.

In a speech delivered at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Ghebreyesus emphasized that war will not bring a lasting solution to the conflict. He stated that a call for peace ultimately benefits Israel itself, warning that the ongoing violence harms the country and fails to offer sustainable resolutions.

The WHO chief pleaded for compassion, stating, “Showing mercy would be beneficial for Israel, Palestinians, and humanity as a whole.” He condemned the use of food and medical supplies as weapons, labeling such actions as profoundly unjust.
