Heatwave Blamed for Deaths of Vulnerable Patients in Beni Mellal
Beni Mellal-Khenifra Regional Health Directorate Confirms Heat-Related Fatalities
In a recent press release, the Beni Mellal-Khenifra Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection has confirmed that the ongoing heatwave has played a significant role in the deaths of several vulnerable individuals in the region. The regional hospital in Beni Mellal reported a total of 21 fatalities, with 17 occurring within the hospital and four outside its premises.
Initial reports had indicated that at least 20 people succumbed to extreme heat conditions in the Beni Mellal area. The Directorate's investigation revealed that the majority of the deceased were elderly patients suffering from chronic illnesses. The substantial rise in temperatures exacerbated their pre-existing conditions, leading to their demise.
In light of these findings, the Directorate has urged citizens to take precautions, particularly advising against exposure to sunlight during peak hours. This warning aims to prevent further casualties as the heatwave continues to impact the region.
The confirmation of heat-related deaths has sparked nationwide concern and outrage. In response, the Ministry of Health has committed to implementing emergency measures to mitigate the health risks posed by the severe heat. The Ministry's announcement included the activation of additional shifts in healthcare facilities located in areas experiencing extreme temperatures.
"The Ministry of Health and Social Protection announces it has implemented a series of emergency measures to address the health effects resulting from the high heat wave currently affecting the country," the Ministry stated today.
These proactive steps are intended to ensure that healthcare services are adequately equipped to handle the increased demand and to protect the health of vulnerable populations during this challenging period.
In summary, the Beni Mellal-Khenifra Regional Health Directorate’s confirmation of heatwave-related fatalities underscores the severe impact of extreme weather on vulnerable patients. The Ministry of Health’s swift response aims to safeguard public health amidst rising temperatures.
