Morocco Showcases Sustainable Agriculture Efforts at Abu Dhabi Conference

Morocco's pioneering Sustainable Oasis Initiative took the spotlight at the Ministerial Conference of Date Producing and Processing Countries in Abu Dhabi. Spearheaded by Moroccan Agriculture Minister Mohammed Sadiki, the delegation advocated for strategies aimed at safeguarding vulnerable oasis ecosystems.

During the two-day conference, agriculture ministers from leading date-producing nations engaged in high-level discussions. Topics ranged from monitoring projects targeting the destructive red palm weevil bug to updates on Morocco's flagship Sustainable Oasis Initiative.

Originally unveiled at the 2016 COP22 climate talks in Marrakech, Morocco's initiative focuses on enabling oases to adapt to challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and urbanization. Minister Sadiki emphasized the importance of developing specialized institutions to coordinate strategies ensuring oasis sustainability.

Oases, culturally significant ecosystems hosting unique crops, confront substantial threats to their existence, Sadiki cautioned. Continuous disruptions jeopardize their fragile equilibrium, posing a significant risk amidst the global climate crisis.

Morocco, recognizing the urgency of protecting these endangered areas, has established institutions dedicated to their development and sustainability, the minister highlighted. He stressed the critical need for more effective preventive measures and adaptive solutions.

In pursuit of this goal, Morocco recently convened the 1st International Congress of Oases and Date Palm, facilitating the exchange of expertise toward realizing the initiative's objectives. Minister Sadiki urged sustained cooperation to assist oasis systems in coping with climate impacts. He also expressed Morocco's readiness to establish an intergovernmental framework, enabling concerned nations to collectively advance the Sustainable Oasis Initiative.
