Tunisia Extends State of Emergency Until January 30, 2025
Tunisia has announced the extension of its nationwide state of emergency for an additional month, from January 1 to January 30, 2025, according to an official statement. This measure was formalized through a decree published in the official gazette of the Republic of Tunisia.
The state of emergency in Tunisia has been a recurring policy since November 24, 2015, following a tragic terrorist attack in the capital. The incident involved the explosion of a presidential guard bus, resulting in the loss of 12 security personnel and injuries to 16 others, including police officers and civilians. The attack underscored significant security challenges, prompting authorities to implement extraordinary measures to safeguard the nation.
Since then, the state of emergency has been repeatedly extended to address persistent security concerns and to ensure stability across the country. The most recent extension covered the period from January 31 to December 31, 2024.
The ongoing state of emergency grants Tunisian authorities enhanced powers, including increased control over public gatherings, expanded surveillance capabilities, and greater authority to restrict certain activities. These measures aim to counter potential threats while balancing the need for public safety and civil liberties.
Tunisia’s leadership continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining vigilance in the face of evolving security risks. The latest extension underscores the government’s commitment to addressing these challenges and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
This decision reflects the broader regional context of heightened security concerns, with Tunisia striving to navigate complex threats while working toward long-term stability and peace.
