Moroccan Nadorcott mandarins set to revive challenging US citrus season
Morocco's citrus export season to the United States encountered significant hurdles during its initial phase in late 2024, but shows promise for improvement with the upcoming Nadorcott variety. The season began with Clemenules and Nour clementine exports in November and December, facing quality issues including granulation, soft texture, and premature yellowing.
Market timing proved particularly challenging as the exports coincided with California's established clementine season, which had commenced in October with high-quality produce. The situation was further complicated by lingering Chilean summer citrus in the US market through early December, creating oversupply conditions and subsequent price deterioration.
However, the industry's outlook is improving with the transition to Nadorcott mandarins. The first shipment of this premium variety is scheduled to arrive on the US East Coast this week, potentially marking a turning point in the season. Industry experts anticipate better quality despite slightly smaller fruit sizes, with availability expected to continue through late March or early April.
The timing of Nadorcott shipments could prove advantageous, coinciding with a typical supply gap in late January as California transitions between varieties. However, success will depend on careful management of shipping volumes to prevent market saturation and maintain stable pricing.
While US retailers typically favor domestic produce, quality Moroccan citrus can secure its market position by meeting consumer expectations for taste and freshness. Morocco projects normal harvest volumes with no significant supply constraints, suggesting stable availability throughout the remainder of the season.
The industry's focus now extends beyond immediate market challenges, with participation planned at Fruit Logistica in Berlin from February 5-7. This global trade show presents opportunities for Moroccan exporters to strengthen existing partnerships and develop new market channels for their diverse produce portfolio, which includes grapes, cherries, blueberries, and pears alongside citrus fruits.
Market observers note that success in the coming months will largely depend on maintaining consistent quality standards and strategic shipping practices to align with market demands and pricing dynamics.
