Turkish Official's Sharp Words Escalate Diplomatic Tension with Algeria

Turkish Parliament member Bahadır Nahit Yenişehirlioğlu has sparked controversy with strong criticism of Algeria, accusing the North African nation of providing sanctuary to Kurdish groups that Turkey considers separatist elements. The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) representative characterized this alleged support as a breach of trust between the two nations.

During a public address in Turkey, Yenişehirlioğlu emphasized his country's determination to combat what he termed "traitors" regardless of their location. "Turkey is a strong nation with its proud Turkish sons and will never allow Kurdish separatists to establish their state on Turkish soil," he declared.

The parliamentarian expressed particular disappointment over reports of Kurdish groups allegedly finding refuge in Algeria, a country traditionally viewed as a close Turkish ally. He drew attention to the historical Ottoman-Algerian relationship, noting that Algeria had once been under Ottoman protection.

In a controversial statement addressing historical matters, Yenişehirlioğlu suggested that the Ottoman Empire had erred in its decision to transfer control of Algeria to France. He also referenced historical events involving the Ottoman admiral Barbarossa, highlighting the empire's role in defending Algeria against Spanish forces.

The MP's statements reflect increasing diplomatic strain between Turkey and Algeria, centered on Turkey's concerns about alleged Algerian support for Kurdish groups that Turkey considers a security threat. These remarks signal potential challenges in maintaining positive relations between the two Mediterranean nations.
