Moroccan artist Fatiha Zemmouri creates poetic narratives through material transformation

Fatiha Zemmouri has established herself as a significant figure in contemporary Moroccan art through her innovative work with raw materials and abstract forms. Born in Casablanca in 1966, she divides her time between her home city and Marrakech, exploring themes of transformation, regeneration, and the relationship between nature and human intervention.

Following her education at the École des Beaux-Arts de Casablanca, Zemmouri developed an artistic practice centered on raw materials including charcoal, burned wood, ceramics, and porcelain. Her creative approach combines diverse techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and collage to craft abstract works that reflect the natural world.

The elements of earth, fire, and water are fundamental to Zemmouri's artistic process. Through a minimalist approach that simplifies natural forms, she allows the inherent fragility of her materials to convey messages about human vulnerability and resilience.

Her work has gained international recognition through exhibitions at prestigious venues worldwide. She has presented solo shows at Art Dubai and participated in the Marrakech Biennale, reaching audiences across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Her pieces have been showcased in prominent galleries in Paris, Rabat, Tangier, and Casablanca.

Zemmouri's art is represented in major public and private collections, including the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and DAF Beirut. Notable private collectors of her work include Nathalia Vodianova and Antoine Pinault, Ruffini Rumeo, and Élisabeth Bauchet Bouhlal.

Central to Zemmouri's work is the interplay between creation and destruction. Her technique of deconstructing materials and reimagining them in abstract forms opens discussions about nature's fragility and humanity's role in its transformation.
