Moroccan Film 'Triple A' Shines at Brussels International Film Festival in Dakar

The Moroccan feature film Triple A, directed by Jihane El Bahhar, received prestigious recognition at the Brussels International Film Festival held from December 3 to 7, 2024, in Dakar, Senegal. Morocco was the guest of honor at this year’s festival, and Triple A stood out among the international competition.

The film, which explores the intertwined love stories of three marginalized individuals, won both the Best Screenplay and Best Actor awards. Aziz Dadas was honored for his remarkable performance, portraying one of the lead roles in this poignant tale.

Alongside Triple A, two other Moroccan works were showcased in the festival’s international competition. Rachida Saadi's short film Amira was featured in the short film category, while Aziz Khouadir's documentary Cubarouis (a Morocco-Cuba collaboration) also gained attention.

Amira, a short film shot during the quarantine period, tells the story of a couple, Amira and Karam, who lead a peaceful yet monotonous life with their daughter, Sonia. As Karam prepares to sign a contract for an apartment, he uncovers that his wife has been hiding money. Suspicion escalates, and with the help of her boyfriend, Karam plots to catch Amira in an act of infidelity.

Organizers of the Brussels International Film Festival praised the event for its diverse selection of films, emphasizing its role in showcasing the precision and creativity of African and Belgian filmmakers on the global stage. This edition marked a significant milestone, with the festival's focus on promoting Pan-African cinema in Belgium and beyond.

The festival’s three main competitions—international films, young talent, and documentaries—were complemented by forums and discussions exploring pressing issues in the film industry. These elements contributed to making the 9th edition a memorable celebration of cinema and culture in Dakar, which continues to build its reputation as a hub for global film art.
