Strengthening Sustainable Fisheries Key Outcomes of the INRH’s 31st Council Session
The National Institute for Fisheries Research (INRH) held its 31st Council Session on Friday in Rabat, chaired by the Secretary of State responsible for Maritime Fisheries. This pivotal meeting focused on presenting and approving the 2025 scientific action plan and budget.
In her opening remarks, the Secretary of State emphasized the critical need for collaboration among stakeholders in the fisheries sector to tackle contemporary challenges. She also highlighted the importance of continuing investments in advanced technologies to enhance ocean observation and ensure sustainable resource management.
The Secretary underscored the INRH’s essential role in advancing the fisheries sector, a cornerstone of Morocco’s blue economy strategy. This aligns with the vision of King Mohammed VI, promoting investment in maritime fisheries and bolstering research for sustainable development.
Key Highlights from the Session
The Council reaffirmed the INRH’s vital contribution to sustainable fisheries management, particularly amid increasing resource demands and growing environmental and climate challenges. To address these issues, the INRH has committed to strengthening its scientific and technical capacities.
For 2025, the Institute’s ambitious action plan focuses on intensifying marine ecosystem exploration, observation, and monitoring. This includes:
- Conducting approximately 80 oceanographic and fish stock assessment campaigns along the coast and offshore.
- Carrying out 420 environmental monitoring sampling campaigns across 140 coastal stations.
- Classifying ten new shellfish farming zones while continuing surveillance of the existing 38 classified areas.
The plan also prioritizes research and development (R&D) in aquaculture and seafood product valorization through innovative projects. These initiatives aim to diversify aquaculture offerings and develop new processed seafood products.
Investment in Research Infrastructure
To support these goals, the INRH plans to enhance research resources through investments in new structures and equipment, particularly in seafood product valorization. These efforts are expected to open new horizons for the fisheries sector, fostering sustainability and innovation.
Recognition of Efforts
The Council commended the dedication of the INRH staff and encouraged the Institute to continue its efforts in research, communication, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge to benefit the sector.
As Morocco positions itself as a leader in sustainable fisheries, the INRH remains at the forefront of fostering a resilient and innovative blue economy.
