Pope Francis in stable condition after pneumonia diagnosis
Pope Francis is reportedly in good spirits and recovering in the hospital after being diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. The Vatican confirmed that the 88-year-old pontiff had a peaceful night and enjoyed breakfast this morning. He has been undergoing treatment for bronchitis at Rome's Gemelli Hospital since Friday, which led to the cancellation of his weekend engagements.
The Pope, who previously had pleurisy and underwent lung surgery as a young adult, is being closely monitored by medical staff. According to the Vatican, tests and X-rays continue to present a complex medical picture. While bronchitis can develop into pneumonia, which affects the lungs' air sacs, his condition remains under careful observation.
Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See press office, reassured the public that Pope Francis remains in good spirits and appreciates the support and prayers. During his hospital stay, the Pope has reportedly been reading newspapers and carrying out some light work.
Although his health has raised concerns in recent years, the Pope has faced several bouts of illness, including influenza, over the past two years. Pilgrims arriving in the Vatican have expressed their well-wishes for a speedy recovery.
Bilateral pneumonia, a severe lung infection, requires significant care, and the Vatican has not yet provided details on how long the Pope’s hospitalization will last. A spokesperson mentioned that adjustments to his medication have been necessary, and he will need adequate time for recovery.
