Car attack in Mannheim: one dead and several injured
A tragic incident unfolded in Mannheim, Germany, when a car drove into a crowd of pedestrians, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The event took place in Planken, the city's main shopping street, where a black SUV sped through the crowd, knocking over multiple people. The vehicle had been traveling from Paradeplatz square towards the Mannheim Water Tower when the attack occurred.
Local authorities confirmed that one suspect was arrested in connection with the incident, though it's unclear whether others were involved. Emergency operations are ongoing in the city, with the police urging residents to stay away from the downtown area. This attack comes just weeks after a similar car attack in Munich, raising concerns over public safety in the region.
Eyewitnesses reported that at least one person died, although authorities have yet to officially confirm the casualties. The incident occurred as crowds gathered for carnival parades across Germany, including the Rhineland region. This event adds to the growing list of violent incidents in the country, including previous car rammings in Magdeburg and Munich, and a stabbing in Mannheim in 2024.
