Severe Weather Disrupts Travel Between Spain and Morocco

Strong winds and torrential rain have led to the cancellation of passenger ferry services between Tarifa, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco, as adverse weather conditions grip the region.

Authorities from the Algeciras Bay Port Authority reported that the unfavorable weather in the Strait of Gibraltar has compelled the cancellation of all scheduled departures from Tarifa, with the exception of a single sailing at 8 p.m., which remains subject to weather conditions.

In parallel, services operating between Algeciras and Tangier Med encountered delays; however, no sailings have been officially canceled at this point.

Spain’s National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued a yellow alert for the Strait of Gibraltar, alongside several regions in the Cadiz province, effective until noon today. The agency cautioned residents to prepare for rainfall amounts reaching up to 40 liters per square meter in various locations.

The coastline along the strait is also under a weather advisory due to high wave activity, with Aemet reporting gusts of southwest winds peaking at 80 km/h and wave heights soaring to four meters.

This latest disruption is part of an ongoing series of weather-induced transportation issues affecting the region this season. The challenging weather conditions have also impacted travel schedules between Algeciras and Tangier, with a complete route block reported last Tuesday.

Maritime authorities are diligently monitoring the situation as thousands of travelers experience growing uncertainty regarding their journeys between the two countries.
