Catalonia reservoirs reach 60% capacity for the first time in three years

Catalonia's internal basin reservoirs have reached 60% of their capacity, a level not seen since January 2022. This increase is widespread, with six out of the nine reservoirs now above 50%, and only one, Siurana, remaining below 25%.

Regarding the five reservoirs in the Ter-Llobregat system, which are still under drought alert, they have also surpassed the 60% threshold, currently at 60.4%. This marks the return to normal conditions. The significant rise in reservoir levels this March is due to historic and widespread rainfall, which boosted water levels by thirty percentage points in just over 20 days.

The reservoirs have shown a sharp improvement throughout March. Compared to last year, their water levels have tripled. In the Ter-Llobregat system, the five reservoirs had an average level below 20% at the start of March 2024, but now they exceed 60%.

This 60% mark is the minimum required to move from the drought alert phase to normal conditions. Sílvia Paneque, the Consellera of Territori, warned last week that while crossing this threshold was important, it’s also crucial to monitor rainfall throughout April to ensure a stable transition to normal conditions without reverting to restrictions.

As of Thursday, the internal basin reservoirs are at 60% capacity, holding more than 416 cubic hectometers of water. Darnius-Boadella exceeds 60%, Sau has reached 63%, and the neighboring Susqueda reservoir stands at 43.3%. Sant Ponç is at 74%, Riudecanyes is approaching 50% (48.6%), Foix remains at full capacity (100%), and Baells has slightly decreased as water is being released, now at 95.7%.
