Mobilization for a Social and Democratic Europe
On Sunday, a large group of individuals and civil society organizations, including pro-European and youth groups like "Equipo Europa," trade unions, universities, and cultural institutions such as the Círculo de Bellas Artes, have organized a major demonstration in Madrid to affirm the European Union and its founding principles.
This event coincides with the week of Europe Day, celebrated on Friday in honor of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which led to the creation of the EU. The organizers of the demonstration emphasized in their manifesto that "Europe has never been at such risk in the last 80 years as it is today" and that the "response to this threat is the European Union."
The demonstration will take place at 12:00 PM in Plaza de Callao and is expected to follow the example of other European capitals that have mobilized in previous instances to champion the EU's role. Notably, a similar rally in Rome on March 15th gathered around 50,000 people, according to the organizers, at Piazza del Popolo. Other similar demonstrations have also been held this week in cities such as Barcelona, Bilbao, and Zaragoza.
