Spain explores development projects in Morocco's Dakhla
A Spanish delegation from the municipality of La Oliva in the Canary Islands recently visited the southern Moroccan city of Dakhla to assess ongoing development initiatives and infrastructure projects in the region.
Led by La Oliva Mayor Isai Blanco Marrero, the delegation found the visit to be highly productive. "This visit was fruitful and allowed the delegation to see the efforts being made to advance development at all levels in the region, particularly in the areas of economy and infrastructure," Marrero remarked.
Errageb Hormatollah, president of the Dakhla Municipal Council, participated in discussions with the Spanish delegation, highlighting their appreciation for the continuous development efforts in the area. He emphasized that the meetings served as a platform to discuss enhancing cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish regions.
This visit occurs amid strengthening ties between Spain and Morocco, with both nations signaling a commitment to deepening their multisectoral relations. The two countries have pledged to bolster bilateral cooperation in various areas, including security, migration management, and diplomatic relations.
In a significant move, Spain endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in 2022, recognizing it as a serious and credible political solution to the Sahara dispute. This decision has been interpreted as a strategic setback for Algeria, which supports the Polisario Front as part of its regional agenda against Morocco’s territorial integrity.
Despite Algeria's efforts to counter Morocco's growing influence regarding the Sahara question, Rabat has garnered support from over 113 countries in recent years. Many nations, including major powers such as France and the United States, have embraced the Moroccan autonomy initiative, viewing it as the only viable solution to the protracted conflict.
