Cyclist Dennis receives suspended sentence after wife's tragic death

A South Australian judge has imposed a nearly 17-month suspended sentence on cyclist Dennis following his guilty plea related to his wife's fatal road incident. The court took into account his remorse and his responsibilities as the primary caregiver for their children.

Dennis, 34, pleaded guilty to an "aggravated act likely to cause harm" in connection to the December 2023 incident that resulted in the death of retired cyclist Hoskins. Notably, he was not charged with causing her death.

During the proceedings, Judge Ian Press stated that a dispute over home renovations led Dennis to drive away in an attempt to cool off. Hoskins jumped onto the car's hood, but Dennis continued driving slowly for about 10 seconds—a decision the judge described as "inherently risky and dangerous."

As the car approached an intersection, Hoskins opened the door while it was still moving, and Dennis tried to close it before accelerating. The judge clarified that the prosecution acknowledged that Hoskins unintentionally held onto the vehicle as it sped away, resulting in her tragic fall and subsequent death.

Hoskins sustained severe injuries and passed away in an Adelaide hospital. She was a representative for Australia at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and was part of the team that won the team pursuit event at the 2015 Track Cycling World Championships.

Dennis, an Olympic medalist in 2012 and 2021, also claimed victories in the world time trials in 2018 and 2019, along with a stage win in the 2015 Tour de France. The judge emphasized the profound grief and turmoil caused by the events of December 30, 2023, describing them as a tragedy that deeply affected those who loved Hoskins.
