Severe weather alert: thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for northern Italy
Italy continues to grapple with turbulent weather as an Atlantic low-pressure system approaches, set to bring instability across the northern regions of the country. The Italian Civil Protection Department has issued a yellow alert for several areas, highlighting the potential for severe weather conditions.
As the low-pressure system moves toward Italy, it is expected to unleash heavy rainfall and intense thunderstorms, particularly impacting the northwestern regions. The alert covers parts of Piedmont, Lombardy, and Emilia-Romagna, as well as the entirety of Liguria, large portions of Tuscany, and Umbria. These areas are popular tourist destinations, making the warning especially significant for travelers.
From the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, widespread precipitation and thunderstorms have been reported, particularly in Piedmont, where Turin experienced a significant downpour. As the day progresses, the severe weather is anticipated to spread to the central and southern regions, including Liguria, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany. The forecast indicates that these storms will be accompanied by heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, localized hail, and strong wind gusts.
The Civil Protection Department emphasizes caution, noting the risk of wind gusts during thunderstorms, which may also bring hail. Recent weather patterns have already caused considerable disruption; merely days ago, Cyclone Ines swept through Italy, resulting in heavy rain and severe storms, particularly affecting southern regions like Sicily.
As Italy faces yet another wave of inclement weather, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and updating the public on the evolving forecast. Residents and visitors are advised to remain vigilant and heed official warnings, especially in light of the ongoing challenges posed by severe weather this year.
