Morocco's Noor Ouarzazate III solar plant resumes operations after lengthy shutdown

Morocco’s Noor Ouarzazate III solar power plant has resumed electricity production following over a year of inactivity caused by a technical incident. The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) confirmed this significant milestone, marking a crucial step in the nation's renewable energy transition strategy.

The facility, operational since 2018, utilizes advanced concentrated solar power tower technology. This system employs a series of heliostat mirrors to focus sunlight onto a receiver atop a central tower. The captured energy is stored as heat in molten salts, enabling the plant to generate electricity even in the absence of direct sunlight.

A leak in one of the thermal storage tanks led to the plant's shutdown in February 2024. These tanks, which operate under extreme thermal conditions, are vital for the plant’s functionality. Experts at the site leveraged their technical skills and resources to replace the damaged component and rectify the issue.

"This restart is the result of our teams’ strong mobilization on the ground. It demonstrates our ability to address complex situations with methodology and responsibility," stated Tarik Ameziane Moufaddal, MASEN’s CEO.

The restart process was meticulous, involving enhanced verification procedures and a series of tests to ensure optimal safety conditions. This success reflects robust coordination among MASEN’s industrial partners and adherence to international safety and performance standards.

In addition to this achievement, MASEN has initiated the construction of a new storage tank designed for improved resistance to thermal cycles. This upgrade aims to bolster the reliability of the overall system and enhance the unit’s heat storage capacity.

The resumption of operations reestablishes the plant's critical role in Morocco’s ambition to be a leading African hub for renewable energy production. "This achievement reaffirms Moroccan expertise in renewable energy and supports the Kingdom’s energy transition," noted Moufaddal. He emphasized that the restart illustrates Morocco’s capability to manage sophisticated energy infrastructure with rigor and responsibility in a rapidly evolving sector.

Noor Ouarzazate III is a testament to Morocco’s broader vision of transitioning to clean, eco-friendly energy sources. The nation has intensified its efforts through the launch of significant projects aimed at contributing to the global shift toward cleaner energy. These initiatives position Morocco as a frontrunner in energy transition, reinforcing its sustainable development strategy.
