Tragic shooting at Florida State University leaves two dead and four injured

On April 17, a tragic shooting occurred at Florida State University (FSU) in Tallahassee, Florida, where the son of a deputy sheriff killed two people and injured four others before being shot and apprehended by police. Authorities confirmed the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, was a student at the university. The incident unfolded around 11:50 a.m. near the student union building.

The shooter, who acted alone, had gained access to his mother's handgun, which was once her service weapon but had since been retired for personal use. Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, police are continuing their investigation.

The shooting prompted immediate action from police, who instructed students and faculty to shelter in place while they responded. Max Jenkins, an FSU student, witnessed the gunman exiting the student union building and firing shots outside. Eyewitness Chris Pento, who was visiting the campus, described the chaos as people ran to escape the gunfire.

While authorities believe the suspect also brought a shotgun onto campus, it is still uncertain whether it was involved in the attack. This incident marks the second shooting at FSU in 11 years, with the previous attack occurring in 2014 when a graduate opened fire at the campus library, injuring several individuals.

The suspect, who was shot by police when he failed to surrender, is currently hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The four injured victims are also receiving treatment.

Mass shootings at U.S. educational institutions have become a tragic and recurring issue, and this incident at FSU adds to the growing list of college campus shootings in recent years.
