UK police ban Palestine Action protest near parliament
British police have prohibited the campaign group Palestine Action from holding a protest outside parliament on Monday. This decision follows an incident last week when two members of the group illegally entered a military base. The government is also considering officially banning the organisation.
In response, Palestine Action announced it would relocate its protest to Trafalgar Square, which is just outside the police exclusion zone. Since the conflict in Gaza began, the pro-Palestinian group has frequently targeted defence companies and other firms in the UK linked to Israel.
There are reports that the government is contemplating labeling Palestine Action as a terrorist group, similar to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The Metropolitan Police of London stated that they would enforce an exclusion zone around the Houses of Parliament for the planned protest, which is a common site for demonstrations supporting various causes.
The Police Commissioner emphasized the importance of the right to protest but indicated that actions supporting this group exceed what most consider lawful protest. Authorities have informed the government of the grounds for potentially banning the organisation.
Government officials are expected to address the issue in parliament. The police allege that members of Palestine Action have caused millions of pounds in criminal damage, attacked an officer with a sledgehammer, and recently damaged two military aircraft.
