British national detained in Cyprus over espionage and terrorism suspicions
A British citizen was arrested in Cyprus on allegations of espionage and terrorism. Authorities suspect he conducted surveillance of a key Royal Air Force (RAF) base on the island and may have connections with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
The RAF base in question is considered the UK’s primary operational hub for missions in the Middle East. Reports indicate that the arrest followed intelligence about a potential imminent terrorist threat.
The suspect appeared in a local court, which ordered an eight-day detention for further investigation. Police have refrained from disclosing additional details, citing concerns over national security.
He reportedly lived near the base in a flat in Zakaki, Limassol, and was seen carrying equipment such as a camera with a long lens and multiple mobile phones. Additionally, he is believed to have monitored another airbase located in the western region of the island since mid-April.
Although initial reports suggested he might be Azerbaijani, the UK Foreign Office confirmed collaboration with Cypriot authorities regarding the arrest of a British individual.
Security measures at RAF bases have been heightened recently after activists breached another RAF base in Oxfordshire and damaged military aircraft. This particular base serves as a central point for UK strategic air transport and refueling, including flights to the Cyprus base under surveillance.
