Ziad Bourji captivates Rabat audience in an intimate Mawazine debut

For his debut performance at the Mawazine Rhythms of the World Festival, Lebanese singer Ziad Bourji chose sincerity over spectacle. Performing on Saturday evening at Rabat’s Mohammed V National Theatre, Bourji delivered a heartfelt concert that prioritized emotion over elaborate production in a venue filled to capacity.

With remarkable simplicity, Bourji took the stage with a disarming authenticity. His first words to the audience set the tone for an honest and genuine exchange. The crowd responded immediately, joining in with enthusiastic applause, emotional glances, and united voices that revealed the anticipation surrounding his appearance.

Throughout the hour-long performance, Bourji revisited some of his most beloved songs including Ana Wiyak, El Yawm Yawmak, Mish Tayeq, and the widely popular Shou Helou, which the audience sang along to in unison. He also paid subtle tribute to legendary Arab artists like Fairouz and Dalida, interpreting their songs with touching restraint and sincerity.

More than the songs themselves, it was Bourji’s delivery that left an impression. Each performance felt like a personal confession. His understated voice often gave way to intentional pauses—moments where the silence built a quiet yet powerful connection between the artist and the audience.

As the show reached its emotional peak, Bourji draped a Moroccan flag over his shoulders. This spontaneous gesture drew loud applause and cheers, symbolizing a deep connection with the Moroccan public. He repeatedly expressed admiration for Morocco’s rich cultural heritage throughout the evening.

Running from June 20 to 28 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Mawazine Festival continues to unite people through music. Ziad Bourji’s first participation introduced the Moroccan audience to a tender, human-centered side of Lebanon’s contemporary music scene.
