Moroccan police intercept over 3 tons of cannabis near Essaouira
Moroccan authorities have successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of cannabis near the coastal city of Essaouira, marking another milestone in the country’s fight against international drug trafficking.
Major drug bust near Sidi Ishaq
Early Tuesday morning, regional police in Essaouira, working in coordination with Morocco’s intelligence agency, seized 3 tons and 30 kilograms of cannabis resin, locally known as chira. According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the drugs were concealed in 80 bundles near the rural coastal area of Sidi Ishaq.
Police also discovered 29 plastic containers holding 725 liters of fuel, believed to be intended for boats used in smuggling operations.
Arrests and cash seizure
Three individuals, suspected of being part of an international drug trafficking network, were arrested during the operation. Authorities also confiscated MAD 120,000 in cash, which is thought to be proceeds from illegal activities.
The investigation, overseen by the public prosecutor, aims to uncover further details about the network and identify additional suspects involved in the smuggling attempt.
Commitment to combating trafficking
The DGSN emphasized its ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking and dismantle the criminal organizations operating in the region. This operation underscores Morocco’s resolve to curb the influence of such networks while reinforcing border security and regional cooperation.
