Separated at 3, thriving at 19: Melbourne twins’ extraordinary journey

Krishna and Trishna, conjoined twins separated by surgeons in Melbourne 16 years ago, are now thriving as they transition into adulthood. Their remarkable story, which began with a life-threatening medical condition, has evolved into one of resilience, innovation, and hope.

A groundbreaking surgery

In 2009, when the twins were just under three years old, a 29-hour marathon surgery at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital successfully separated them. The procedure, considered nearly impossible at the time, required a team of talented surgeons and months of preparation. Before the landmark operation, Krishna and Trishna had undergone 20 separate surgeries while conjoined, a testament to the immense challenges they faced from birth.

The twins were rescued from an orphanage in Bangladesh by their adoptive mother, Moira Kelly, who brought them to Australia in pursuit of better medical care. Since then, Moira has been their tireless advocate, ensuring their privacy and well-being while helping them embrace life as ordinary young women.

Ongoing challenges and resilience

Despite their progress, the journey has not been without obstacles. Krishna has faced serious health issues, including end-stage renal failure, for which Moira donated a kidney to save her life. Yet both twins have continued to surpass medical expectations, with their extraordinary development drawing praise from the doctors who once feared for their survival.

Trishna, reflecting on their journey, expressed deep gratitude to the Royal Children’s Hospital for giving them a second chance at life. Now, she enjoys a typical daily routine that includes school and social activities, though she acknowledges the unique recognition their story sometimes brings.

A testament to love and perseverance

Moira Kelly, reflecting on the twins' achievements, celebrates their strength and determination. She shares her pride in their resilience and gratitude for the medical breakthroughs that made their survival and recovery possible. As Trishna looks forward to milestones like her debutante ball, the bond between the sisters remains central to their shared success.

An enduring legacy

The story of Krishna and Trishna is a tribute to the power of medical innovation, the unwavering devotion of a parent, and the resilience of the human spirit. It continues to inspire those who follow advancements in healthcare and stories of overcoming immense odds.
