Essaouira’s Gnaoua festival ignites on a spectacular day 2
The second day of the Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira delivered a mesmerizing blend of music, culture, and connection, transforming the city into a vibrant hub of rhythm and energy.
From meditative melodies by the beach to spiritual ceremonies within ancient fortress walls, every corner of Essaouira pulsed with the festival’s signature fusion of tradition and innovation. Forums buzzed with creative exchanges, while hidden jam sessions in the winding alleys of the medina added a touch of mystery to the celebration.
As evening fell, the Moulay Hassan stage became the epicenter of the festival. International Afrobeats sensation CKay ignited the crowd with his infectious rhythms, followed by electrifying performances from Moroccan artists. The spirit of Gnaoua came to life as legendary maâlems, including Maâlem Abdelkader Amlil, Maâlem Abdelkebir Merchane, Maâlem Mehdi El Kardoudi, and Maâlem Mustapha Baqbou, enchanted the audience, turning the square into a pulsating circle of trance and unity.
The festival’s second day also showcased standout collaborations, such as Asmaa Hamzaoui’s powerful fusion performance with Rokia Koné. Later, Maâlem Morad Elmarjan teamed up with Dhafer Youssef for an evocative ritual-electro set that left attendees swaying in harmony.
Beyond the main stage, intimate venues across the medina, like Zaouia Sidna Blal and Dar Souiri, hosted smaller, soulful concerts that felt like secret ceremonies. These performances offered festival-goers an emotional and personal connection to the music, creating unforgettable moments.
Day two was a dynamic journey through beats, trance, and innovation, honoring Gnaoua’s rich heritage while embracing fresh global influences. From traditional maâlems to cutting-edge fusions, Essaouira reaffirmed its place as a beacon of genre-defying artistry.
