Barcelona Strengthens Summer Policing to Tackle Pickpocketing and Public Drinking
Barcelona is fully prepared to handle the intensive use of public spaces during the summer months. This season attracts a high number of residents and tourists to the streets, which often leads to coexistence challenges. The city will host nearly 200 popular festivals, cultural, and sports events in public areas. To ensure safety and promote civility, the city government led by Jaume Collboni will deploy a plan that increases personnel by around 600 professionals during the beach season, extending until early October.
"We are ready for summer," stated the mayor during the presentation of the summer security plan for the Catalan capital. The initiative aims to guarantee peaceful coexistence and security in public spaces. The municipal administration will invest 4 million euros to strengthen the Urban Guard's services and 7.5 million euros to enhance public space cleaning. Additionally, the mayor called on citizens to act responsibly and with civility to ensure a calm and enjoyable summer for everyone.
A key focus of the plan is to improve public perceptions of safety by targeting pickpocketing, drug sales and consumption, and tourists who disregard rules. To achieve this, the Urban Guard will increase daily patrols with 200 officers, including 110 new recruits, who will work specifically to prevent antisocial behavior and maintain security, particularly in the busiest summer hotspots.
