Musk blasts Trump’s budget as a disastrous spending bill

Billionaire Elon Musk has reignited his criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s flagship budget legislation, describing it as a “disgusting abomination” in a string of social media posts shortly after departing from his advisory role in the administration.

Known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, the legislation has come under fire for its sweeping tax cuts and increased spending, which Musk claims will dangerously inflate the national deficit. “This massive, pork-filled Congressional bill is an outrage,” Musk posted. “Shame on those who supported it.”

Musk argued that the proposed spending would raise the U.S. deficit to $2.5 trillion and saddle Americans with unsustainable debt. He accused Congress of driving the nation toward bankruptcy. The bill includes tax cut extensions from Trump’s first term and allocates $46.5 billion for expanding border barriers with Mexico. Critics, however, highlight that these gains come at the cost of cutting social programs and lifting the national debt ceiling by $4 trillion.

The Congressional Budget Office forecasts the bill would slash $698 billion from Medicaid and cut $267 billion from SNAP (food stamps), sparking bipartisan concerns about reduced access to vital services. Fiscal conservatives have also raised alarms about the debt increase.

Despite these concerns, the House narrowly passed the bill 215-214 on May 22, with only two Republicans joining Democrats in opposition. The legislation now heads to the Senate, where the GOP holds a slim majority.

Musk, who led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) until recently, resigned after reaching the legal limit for special government service. During his tenure, he aimed to eliminate bureaucratic waste, a mission he claims this bill directly contradicts. In a CBS interview, Musk said the bill increases deficits instead of reducing them and undermines DOGE’s goals.

His remarks have deepened speculation of a rift with Trump, despite the president recently praising Musk’s contributions. Trump awarded him a ceremonial White House key and hailed his impact on transforming federal operations.

Still, Trump’s press team dismissed tensions, reaffirming the president’s support for the bill. Meanwhile, Republican Senator Rand Paul backed Musk, warning that the legislation would push the U.S. further into debt.

Trump responded by defending the bill online, branding it a “BIG GROWTH BILL” and attacking Paul for his constant opposition.
