Far-right coalition’s roadmap to dismantle the European Union gains momentum

The European far-right has unveiled a detailed plan to radically reshape or dismantle the European Union (EU), spearheaded by Hungarian and Polish think tanks with support from Spain’s Vox party and other populist forces. Known as The Great Reset, the document outlines two scenarios: either dismantle the EU entirely or reduce its institutions to a minimal, state-controlled framework. The initiative marks a bold shift in strategy for nationalist parties, moving from vague anti-EU rhetoric to a structured and actionable blueprint.

A detailed vision for a reimagined Europe

Penned by Poland’s Ordo Iuris Institute and Hungary’s Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), The Great Reset proposes radically scaling back the EU’s powers. The first scenario, called “Back to the Roots,” seeks to revert the EU to its 1957 model, reducing it to a free-trade zone with limited political influence. The plan includes dismantling key institutions, such as transforming the European Commission into a powerless secretariat and altering the European Parliament to include members appointed by national governments. Judicial oversight by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) would also be drastically curtailed.

Further, the document proposes an “à la carte” integration model, allowing member states to opt out of policies they oppose, such as immigration or renewable energy. Untouchable areas, according to the plan, would include “family, public order, moral order, and education,” ensuring states retain full sovereignty in these domains. The report also advocates for stricter unanimity rules, requiring complete consensus for EU decisions, and renaming the EU as the “European Community of Nations.”

The second scenario, titled “A New Beginning,” envisions replacing the EU with a completely new framework of cooperation, where member states would independently decide their level of participation in various projects. This model would require negotiating a “new Union treaty” and a transition plan.

Behind The Great Reset: Ordo Iuris and Mathias Corvinus Collegium

Ordo Iuris and MCC, the think tanks behind the initiative, represent the intellectual core of Europe’s growing far-right movement. Ordo Iuris, known for its influence on Poland’s ultraconservative policies, has been instrumental in shaping controversial laws such as the criminalization of sexual education and the establishment of “LGBTQ+ ideology-free zones.” Registered as an EU lobbyist, the organization collaborates with far-right parties across Europe and has engaged with Spain’s Vox since at least 2022.

The MCC, funded by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government, is a training ground for nationalist elites and a key player in promoting illiberal ideologies. Its director of European Studies, Spaniard Rodrigo Ballester, co-authored The Great Reset. Both think tanks aim to consolidate a transnational cultural and political network to advance their vision of a decentralized, conservative Europe.

A transnational push for nationalist ideals

The plan has gained support from key far-right figures and parties. Vox, represented by leader Santiago Abascal and European delegation head Jorge Buxadé, formally endorsed the initiative at a Madrid event in May 2025. While Vox has not clarified whether it supports dismantling the EU outright or scaling it back, Buxadé expressed confidence in the project, calling it “the beginning of The Great Reset.”

Beyond Spain, the initiative has secured backing from Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, members of Poland’s Law and Justice party, and the Confederation, an even more hardline Polish group. The report’s promoters, including the Patriots for Europe group — the third-largest faction in the European Parliament — plan to launch it in Paris with the participation of France’s National Rally. Talks are also underway with Italy’s Brothers of Italy party, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The influence of The Great Reset extends beyond Europe, with the Heritage Foundation, a key player in U.S. conservative politics, lending its support. The idea for the initiative was born at a 2024 Warsaw conference co-organized by the Heritage Foundation and Ordo Iuris, which explored a nationalist vision for Europe’s future.

A clash of visions for Europe’s future

As the EU debates ways to streamline decision-making and strengthen unity, The Great Reset offers a starkly opposing vision. Its proposals aim to dismantle the EU’s authority, prioritize national sovereignty, and roll back progressive policies. Critics argue that such a model could erode European cohesion and undermine collective responses to global challenges. With nationalist parties gaining traction, the battle over the future of Europe is intensifying, and the far-right’s bold roadmap is now firmly on the table.
