Israeli airstrike in Gaza kills 14, mainly women and children
An Israeli airstrike targeted a residential building in Gaza’s Jabaliya refugee camp on Monday, resulting in the deaths of 14 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities. The Shifa and al-Ahli hospitals reported that among the victims were five women and seven children.
The Israeli military has not yet responded to requests for comment. Israel maintains that it targets only militants and tries to minimize civilian casualties, attributing civilian deaths to Hamas’s presence in densely populated areas.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants attacked Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting 251. Currently, Hamas holds 58 hostages, with about a third believed to be alive after previous releases.
Since then, Israel’s military operations have resulted in over 54,000 Palestinian deaths, primarily women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, although the classification of victims as civilians or combatants is not specified. The offensive has devastated large parts of Gaza and displaced nearly 90% of its residents.
Hamas demands the release of remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire, and an Israeli withdrawal. Israel insists it will continue its campaign until all hostages are freed and Hamas is defeated or exiled. It also plans to control Gaza indefinitely and promote voluntary migration of much of the population a plan widely opposed by Palestinians and the international community, who view it as forced displacement.
