Earthquake victims in Morocco plan protests amid unaddressed grievances
The National Coordination of Earthquake Victims in Morocco has declared its decision to resume protests following an unsuccessful attempt to initiate dialogue with authorities. The group had previously paused demonstrations, hoping to foster constructive engagement, but claims their demands continue to be ignored.
In a statement, the coordination emphasized that the renewed protests aim to address unresolved issues, including fair compensation for affected communities and the implementation of royal directives issued in September 2023. The group called for a protest in front of the Parliament in Rabat on Monday, February 17, urging the participation of human rights organizations, civil society groups, and citizens in solidarity with their cause.
The coordination also expressed deep sorrow over the death of a man referred to as “the martyr of the earthquake tents,” who tragically died in a fire inside his plastic tent in Aslida, Al-Haouz. They demanded an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and condemned the continued neglect of earthquake victims. Furthermore, the group reiterated its request for the formation of an independent committee to address inconsistencies in the compensation process.
Additionally, the coordination reaffirmed its support for the exoneration of its president, Saeed Ait Mahdi, and announced plans to participate in a press conference on Sunday, February 16, to shed further light on the situation and press for action.
