Morocco’s Tanger Med Port achieves historic milestone in global trade
Morocco’s Tanger Med Port has solidified its position as the Mediterranean’s largest port, achieving a historic milestone by handling 10.24 million containers in 2024. This represents an impressive 18.8% increase compared to the previous year, as reported by the country’s Press Agency (MAP). The port not only surpassed its annual target of nine million containers but also demonstrated its growing influence in global trade.
A surge in cargo and operational efficiency
In addition to the record container volume, Tanger Med Port managed 142 million tons of cargo in 2024, marking a 16.2% rise from 2023. The port authority attributed this success to significant operational improvements, including reduced waiting times, upgraded facilities, and enhanced docking processes. These advancements have streamlined operations, enabling the port to handle increased traffic with greater efficiency.
Growth across key sectors
The port’s automotive terminals also saw notable growth, processing 600,872 vehicles in 2024—a 4% increase from the previous year. A substantial portion of these vehicles were manufactured in Morocco for export, underscoring the country’s expanding role in the global automotive industry.
International trucking activity at the port rose by 8.1%, with 516,842 trucks handled in 2024. Industrial goods shipments grew by 6.8%, while food product movements increased by 7.2%, reflecting the port’s diverse capabilities in handling various types of cargo.
Passenger traffic on the rise
Tanger Med Port also experienced a significant uptick in passenger traffic, welcoming 3.047 million travelers in 2024—a 13% surge compared to 2023. This growth highlights the port’s dual role as a vital hub for both trade and travel.
A strategic gateway for global trade
Strategically located on the Strait of Gibraltar, east of Tangier, Tanger Med Port serves as a critical gateway connecting Africa, Europe, and beyond. Its continued expansion and operational excellence have made it a cornerstone of Morocco’s economic development, reinforcing its reputation as a key player in international trade.
With its record-breaking performance in 2024, Tanger Med Port has not only exceeded expectations but also set a new benchmark for ports in the region, positioning itself as an indispensable link in the global supply chain.
