The FIFM and Its Role in Boosting Morocco's Film Industry

The International Film Festival of Marrakech (FIFM), under the high patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, has been a cornerstone in the development of Morocco's cinematic industry. Since its inception, the festival has aligned with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at nurturing young talents and strengthening the national film ecosystem.  

In a statement published on the occasion of the festival's 21st edition, scheduled from November 29 to December 7, Prince Moulay Rachid emphasized the enduring commitment to empowering emerging filmmakers. This effort culminated in the creation of the Ateliers de l'Atlas in 2018, a program designed to support up-and-coming Moroccan, Arab, and African filmmakers. Over the years, the Ateliers de l'Atlas has evolved into a dynamic incubator for regional talent, backing numerous projects and paving the way for a new generation of filmmakers.  

One of its remarkable successes includes the Moroccan filmmaker Asmae El Moudir, whose film The Mother of All Lies made history by earning the prestigious Etoile d’Or at the Marrakech Festival. The project had earlier been recognized and awarded within the framework of the Ateliers de l’Atlas, showcasing the program’s pivotal role in fostering cinematic excellence.  

Prince Moulay Rachid highlighted that these initiatives form part of Morocco’s broader cinematic growth, which saw the production of 34 films last year. This progress continues with the recent launch of Atlas Station, a program aimed at equipping young professionals with skills to access international opportunities, further strengthening the national film industry’s global presence.  

Acknowledging the essential role of critics and journalists, the festival also introduced professional development sessions tailored to these contributors, reinforcing their integral role in shaping a film’s trajectory and success.  

The 21st edition of the festival is set to celebrate cinematic artistry through three notable tributes: the late Naïma Elmcherqui, a luminary of Moroccan cinema; Sean Penn, the acclaimed American actor and filmmaker; and David Cronenberg, the renowned Canadian director. Additionally, this year’s jury, led by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, will embark on the exciting task of uncovering the most promising talents. Meanwhile, the festival’s signature Conversations will offer attendees intimate insights into the experiences of industry icons such as Tim Burton and Alfonso Cuarón.  

Prince Moulay Rachid concluded by expressing the festival’s commitment to being a platform of cultural exchange and solidarity. The FIFM aspires to foster a spirit of dialogue and peace through the universal language of cinema, creating a space for connection, creativity, and shared emotion.
