Strengthening Partnerships for Africa's Energy Advancement
NOUAKCHOTT - Leila Benali, the Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, underscored the need for enhanced collaborations among African nations along the coastal basin to drive development in the energy sector during her address at the 3rd Oil, Gas, and Energy Conference of the Littoral Basin Countries.
In discussions with reporters, Minister Benali emphasized Morocco's commitment to fostering South-South cooperation and projected substantial growth in partnership relations with countries such as Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea Conakry in the coming years. She reiterated that regional cooperation in energy and sustainability stands as a crucial component of Morocco's overarching strategy to expedite the energy transition on a continental scale.
Of particular significance, Minister Benali highlighted the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline, a major project championed by King Mohammed VI for its potential to catalyze socioeconomic progress across Africa. Additionally, Morocco is actively engaged in reinforcing its domestic gas infrastructure through public-private partnerships slated for completion by 2024.
Minister Benali shared that trade between Morocco and the host country, Mauritania, has seen an impressive expansion of over 50 percent in recent years. She commended the growing bilateral ties between the two nations.
In summary, Minister Benali conveyed that the conference provided a platform to renew shared ambitions for the African energy sector. It represents an opportunity for countries along the resource-rich coast to collaboratively chart a more sustainable future, solidifying their commitment to advancing the continent's energy landscape.
